This happens a lot
Guys from smaller states get recruited and are star-struck by big-time out of state programs and end up signing with these programs. The problem is that once they get to the big-time program they are no longer the big fish in a small pond and they realize that they are very average in relation to the talent surrounding them. Other factors such as homesickness, academic realities, etc. also start to affect the formerly starstruck player. After a year or two, many of these players end up leaving the program when they realize that they might not ever play a meaningful down of football. FCS schools live and die by these types of recruits because they can generally promise easier academics and immediate playing time. It has been interesting to see how some of the big-time players from Utah that went to out of state schools have fared. The results have definitely been mixed.
