Following Tony Knap’s departure as Utah State head football coach after the 1966 season, Aggie athletic director Bus Williams received numerous applications for the head football job at the Logan school. Among the applications was one from a little known assistant with the American Football League’s Oakland Raiders. The assistant was Bill Walsh, who went on to coach the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl titles. In his bid to coach the Aggies, Walsh lost out to Chuck Mills.
