President Samuelson said BYU does nothing to discourage the reputation for being hard to get accepted because BYU wants people with little chance of acceptance not to apply. The reason being, when church members get a rejection letter from BYU, sometimes it's hard for them not to feel like the church rejected them. The church would rather have fewer people getting BYU rejection letters.
