Lots of similarities between Mangum and Beck, but the biggest difference IMO...
...is that Mangum isn't taking the helm of a total dumpster-fire of a team. To me, this is the number-one reason that he will develop mentally more quickly and more steadily than Beck did. He was getting absolutely physically beaten up his freshman and sophomore years. BYU gave up 35 and 39 sacks those two years. I don't think he came with mental issues... I think he developed through dysfunction and then had to grow out of them.

Mid-season our Freshman year, John told me that his arm was so beaten up and injured through the season that partway through many games he actually lost feeling in it. Couldn't feel the ball in his hand. You can imagine what it's like to throw like that and you can imagine what 74 sacks in two seasons does to you mentally in the pocket. Some of that is the QB's fault as we've mentioned with Mangum as well, but you need to have confidence in your line to be confident in yourself as a QB.

Junior year sacks dropped to 25 as both he and the line worked together better. Senior year- 15 sacks! They were a well-oiled machine and were as comfortable a pass game as we've seen. You could see how that translated to John's confidence in scanning the field... culminating in a something like 15-second Beck to Harline play. Ultimate patience.

I think Tanner will become a surgeon... but we need the line to keep him clean.
