Yes the rules say call it. I get that. However, it would have been the same result had he known the rule and just jumped on it. Now, if there had been a Lions player also diving for the ball that's different. He would have been denied the opportunity to recover for Detroit and score the TD. I'm sure that's the reason the rule exist. The ref missed the call but at the same time the circumstances didn't warrant giving Detroit basically a free touchdown. Just like the UCONN player who was flagged for gently kicking the ball and setting BYU up for a TD. The rules say call it, but I would have been fine if they hadn't. Some rules should have a little discretion depending on specific circumstances.
