Can we just settle this once and for all: P5 v Mid-Major etc . . .
How about we resolve all the issues surrounding NCAA Conferences and Divisions by adopting the European Soccer Model. Teams are divided up into a league pyramid, which could be modeled after existing confernces to start with, merging some and adding all independents: Premier League (Top division, 20 teams [start with previous years BCS Top 20]); League Championship (second division, 24 teams); League One (third division, 24 teams); League Two (fourth division, 24 teams).

The bottom three teams from each upper division are relegated and replaced by three top teams from the lower division. The first two promotion spots are automatic, going to the first and second place finishers, while the third is determined by a four-team playoff comprised of the third through sixth-place finishers in the lower division.

Imagine the level of competition in the Premier League and this plan rewards teams that perform now. A BYU or Boise State can make it to the Premier League by performing on the field each week and earning its spot. And the Kansas, Washington State and other teams can play among teams of their caliber. In my opinion, BYU would be outside of the Premier League, but with a great record they could work their way in and hold on only if they deserve it.

Seems like a fair option to me and could bring back a lot of excitement to College Football.
