Crowton after Whittingham turned BYU down, until some players went and lobbied for Bronco, who then wowed the admin in his interview. In the aftermath of the hire, the administration guaranteed Lance that he would have a job there until he retired. Which doesn't rule out what you are saying - Bronco had made Doman the favorite son, but when it came to who had the most influential voice among the offensive coaches, especially with the administration, it was Lance, not Doman.
