my nephew travels all the time with his cello, and the one time it was uninsured (his parents were in the process of switching it from one of theirs insurance to the other), the cello was cut in half on an Air Canada flight. They offered $400 and settled (without insurance, so it was generous) $2000, but the cello was a $12000 cello.
