yes he could strike batters out but he walked 105 in 158 innings so his ERA was 4.48 and his WHIP was 1.50. 1958 was the first year he made it to the starting rotation. You recall, we wondered if he would ever find his control.

In 1958, 59 and 60 combined he was 27-30 with an ERA of 4.40 and over 5 BB per game.

In 1961 he got pretty good; in 1962 he became very good; in 1963, he became an all time great but he endured only a few more years due to poor health. They used to pitch them many more innings in those days. But you could judge a pitcher's effectiveness by W/L record compared to the record of their teams when they were less dependent on relievers.
