BYU vs Mississippi Valley
Watching the game last night was frustrating. This team is in need of someone to be the leader and nobody seems willing to step up. There is also a feeling that to many players are free lancing without running any set plays.

Fischer is in a shooting funk and if he does not snap out of it quickly he loses any reason to be on the court. His defense is average at best and he is certainly not a playmaker in distributing the ball.

Someone needs to tell Collinsworth that until he can hit the jump shot on a regular basis he should refrain from taking it. The BYU announcers correctly pointed out that opponents will try and keep him from the basket and force him to shoot the outside shot. What he needs to do is penetrate and kick it to someone else when he draws multiple defenders.

The two bright spots last night were Kaufusi and Emery. Kaufusi continues to show that he is improving and has the ability to score inside. His upside if very high. Emery played good defense but his outside shooting was not very effective. Shooting 30% from the arc tied him with Fischer. But his effort and ability to score inside the arc make him effective. The seven assists were also a strong positive.

Davis played his normal game but he is still prone to dumb turnovers and even though we cut them down to 14 last night it is still to many and several of them were unforced by the defense. Just dumb passes.

I don’t have an answer as to why this team is such a poor shooting one at this point in the season. Last night we shot 28% from the arc and that means we shot over 50% from inside the arc. The FT shooting is dismal at 61% and this will cost us a few games over the season against better teams. If I were Rose I would have this team at the FT line and nobody could leave until they hit 10 in a row and I would repeat that every practice.

In the pregame and other interviews Rose keeps saying he wants the ball to go through the post and yet we continue to run a weave at the top of the arc. Most thought the 30 second shot clock would be no problem for BYU but if you waste 10 seconds in that weave and then look to go inside it forces hurried shots. I would like to see Davis come to the high post and be the first pass and allow the offense to revolve around that position. You could even put Collinsworth in that spot.

To all you supporters of Austin I can only ask how many shots do you think he can miss from point blank range. He gives you some defense and rebounding (I am not sure how much of an incremental increase this really is) but absolutely nothing on offense. The only real positive about Austin is he is not costing us a scholarship.

I think it is becoming obvious that Toolson has fallen from grace with the coaching staff and he may become a casualty next season. I don’t see Calvert being here and Toolson could move on as well to a program where he would get more minutes. With Emery, TJ Haws and Chatman in the backcourt next year I don’t see his playing time increasing.
