No. I've never had Walmart or Target call up a store to check inventory before
a price match. They only make sure there aren't any time restrictions (6AM - 10AM). I've never tried one of the doorbuster specials where they only have 3 items in stock or something though.

I've done it with blu rays a lot (Despicable Me 2, Zero Dark Thirty, etc.), toys, children's clothes (Frozen pajamas a couple years ago), and an ipad on behalf of my Dad a few years ago. Best Buy had a good sale on iPads, but everyone I called were sold out of the size I wanted by mid afternoon. So I went to Walmart, showed them the Best Buy ad, and got it price matched for the Best Buy price. They didn't try calling Best Buy to check.

Maybe the fine print on websites says the item must be in stock at a local store, but I've never noticed that and never had anyone check the other store. Target even price matches Amazon.
