They beat Illinois (5-7) and TWO FCS teams in OOC. Lost to South Carolina on a neutral field. South Carolina finished 3-9 and lost to FCS The Citadel (granted Spurrier bolted mid-season, but USCe was not a good team - that's why Spurrier left). Needed OT to beat Virginia Tech and had close calls against Pitt and 3-9 Georgia Tech. Soft schedule and lackluster results.
UNC avoided Clemson, Florida St., and Louisville in cross-division play.
UNC probably does no better than 9-3 with BYU's schedule. I don't think they would beat Michigan, Nebraska, or UCLA on the road. Probably beat Mizzou though.
Although, if the Tar Heels figure out a way to beat #1 Clemson in the ACC CCG, then they are part of the CFP discussion. It's amazing how a handful of plays can be the difference between 11-1 and in the CFP discussion and 9-3 and outside the top-25.
