1. Running a church is so hard that leadership doesn't want to deal with a black eye from BYU athletics -- thus the No. 1 priority of having a spiritual leader at the helm. With BM in place, they don't have to think about football.
2. If you've had any experience working at BYU in a public-perception capacity, you'd know that micromanaging and meddling is the norm. Again, when your church is big on proselytizing, this will happen.
