Most teams bowl records have become inflated because they now have so many bowl games. How many decent opponents has BYU played in the last 10 years? Only one, Oregon State. In fact Oregon State is the only ranked team BYU has played going back to 2001. Yet BYU only went 6-4 in that time frame. Prior to that BYU, played a ton of ranked teams, but that was in the era where it was tough to make a bowl game. But it is all relative, back in the day BYU played tough opponents but they were also really good. Now when teams are mediocre, they play teams similar to them, and generally good teams play other good teams. So even though there are so many bowl teams, the quality of opponent is similar in each game.

Utah has benefited from a couple mismatches such as Pitt, but most of the teams were similar to Utah (ie Navy, Cal, USC, Ga Tech, etc.).
