Unless things have changed, for the fall semester, a grey shirt player is not part of the team, is not allowed to practice with the team, attend team meetings, etc.

Once Spring comes, he joins the team, practices, etc.

So essentially, he was able to participate in spring ball, off-season workouts, etc.

That doesn't equate to playing a full year of college football.
