How much of the church's overall income/wealth is used to
help the poor and needy? We'll never know - the church won't open up its books. Also, in my experience, most faithful LDS members' motivation for paying tithing isn't to help the poor and needy - it's purely about obedience. Plus, the 10% requirement is steep enough for most people that they aren't able to give to other organizations - the church is where all of their donations go.

It's interesting how people view charitable giving. I increasingly think Huntsman Sr. is wrong when he equates tithes
