Why would the BYU brass prefer the Hawaii bowl? The thing that comes....
to mind is back in the '80s and early '90s when BYU and Hawaii were in the old WAC conference and Lavell was coach. BYU agreed to play Hawaii at Hawaii every year for several years without any games at BYU. It turned out the underlying reason for BYU agreeing to this was that high ranking BYU administrators and their wives were getting paid-for trips to Hawaii with those games. Of course Lavell hated the arrangement, having to play at Hawaii every year, but the higher ups overruled him.
