BYU Basketball is going through a transition right now. The guys that BYU typically got were 2-3* Players (Collinsworth, Haws and Fredette). The new guys are higher ranked (3-4*) and you can see the difference in Emery and Mika.
Emery is a consensus 4* HS player (ranked 4* by Scout, Rivals and ESPN), and you can see the difference. Mika was also a consensus 4*, as is TJ Haws. The next 4-6 years should be very good. Gavin Baxter is a consensus 4*, Payton Dastrup and Yoeli Childs are 3.3* composite guys.
I don't know if we have had so many highly rated players in the past 20 years. The last 3 years have been decent teams but the next 6 years will showcase players that are much better and higher ranked. It should be very exciting.
The downside to this is that 2-3 star guys will probably struggle to start or play significant minutes in the future. Guys like Seljaas, Toolson, Shaw and Calvert may find it difficult to secure playing time during their careers.
Of course some guys will play better than their HS rankings and some worse, and injuries will occur. If you look at the latest 4* guys in Mika and Emery, it is clear that the ranking system has some validity and that the future should be good for BYU basketball.
