Alright I'm going to say it: KN is a step down. Bottom line.
I was not a Bronco fan. Not at all. I thought he was solid. Good not great.

He was entitled. He felt the fans owed him loyalty. We didn't and we never will. We paid his salary and he never seemed to understand that. He came off as self-righteous and touchy. All of that is fine I suppose if you win big games, which he rarely did. We needed somebody better and now we have the chance. The chance to go beyond good to great.

The idea that we shouldn't want great is sad. But worse than that, its wrong. The Church teaches that we be exceptional. Not second best. Of course, our first allegiance is to the covenants we have made. But within those bounds we should never apologize for being competitive. We should strive, every day, to get better and outlast the competition. We should want to win, no excuses.

KN seems like a nice guy with a good record. I'm sure he is a great member of the Church. As a mormon, I am proud of him. But his credentials are not good enough to be BYU's coach. They just aren't. Navy is an amazing institution. It builds young men and women who serve our country. It an outstanding accomplishment that they are even as competitive as they are in football given their much greater goal. But we need to be brutally honest, in football, they are an afterthought and they have been for decades.

BYU is a team in a very different place. We have invested more. We have built more. We care more. We have different traditions. We should have, and do have, higher expectations for our football team. Our expectations strengthen us. We shouldn't back off from them, we should harden them.

BYU's goals are not Navy's goals. We need to be exceptional. KN does not have the credentials, at this point, to be the head coach of a program like BYU. We should demand better, we owe it to ourselves and our beloved alma-mater.
