One thing to keep in mind is that you spend a ton of money on gas. Not only does the houseboat take a lot of gas but so do any toys you bring along (i.e. jet skis, ski boats, etc.) and most of them require premium gas at a premium price.

That said, house boating in Lake Powell is my single favorite vacation. I would totally recommend it.
