Although we really can't know what's going on inside the players' heads,
I tend to agree with you, based on the evidence. But, I would love for them to prove us all wrong on that going forward. One previous poster used the phrase "I don't like this team," which I think is a bit harsh, but I would agree that I don't really enjoy watching this team very much. They're just not that fun to watch, far too inconsistent, with snipits of amazing plays interspersed with far too many lapses in judgement, and far too much snatching of defeat from the jaws of victory. There is far too much hero-ball forced shots on offense, and really even possibly too much hero ball on defense also. They can play great defense at times (ie @Zags, and 2nd half SMU) and force some steals, block some crazy shots, but are then out of position far too often while trying to make the "big play." Why the heck do we so often double team some guy on the 3 point arc, and leave another deadly shooter wide open?? As a result of these hero-attempts, patient teams simply bide their time, and almost everyone seems to have career shooting nights against us in the end.

I think there is just too much unspoken emphasis on being "the guy" to "bring it" and make the "big play" when the "team needs it," both on offense and even on defense. They seem to be able to justify it in their own heads that they are just "trying to help the team" in key moments, but I'm not convinced that the motives are pure enough to make this a good "TEAM," and may be skewed a little too far towards other more individual motivations and aspirations. I may be wrong, but I continue to have my concerns about these issues based on the results and the evidence. These players are all adequately talented to win a lot of games, but perhaps just a bit too talented for their own BRITCHES to play well as a team - a possible pitfall to signing so many former HS stars in their respective HS spheres. There may be just too many who somehow envision they are the next Jimmer, rather than envisioning their team as the next great BYU conference champion.

And I have news for them. None of them are even close to a Jimmer-type player. There never was before, and likely will never be again, a player like Jimmer. Besides ally-oop dunks, for a guy his size, Jimmer can score in just so many different ways that it's almost sick. Despite the fact that he was called upon to "be the guy," and specifically given the role not to over-play on defense to avoid undue foul trouble, he was and still is a team-guy first. And don't believe what some phantom former disgruntled fired "assistant" coach ("cough, cough - Keith Smart") was purported to have said by a "headline hungry" excuse for a sportswriter. Almost everyone else who has ever played with Jimmer (except real ball hogs like D Cousins and T Evans) has reported the opposite, and understands how Jimmer wanted the team to win more than he wanted stats and accolades. The latter are just "by-products." And, based on the evidence, this team's mentality seems to be too focused on the "by-products" to consistently win as a team.
