we watched it also on Saturday.
I think I was more amazed by some of the research we did after the movie.

Here were a few highlights:

There are approximately 150 bodies of hikers the mountain has claimed.

There is an area on Everest that is becoming known as the valley of rainbows. It got it's name from all the colorful jackets collecting in a similar place from those who've died on Everest.

One (non-Everest movie character) hiker was found dead 100 meters out of Camp 4. She was found dead sitting upright leaning against her pack, eyes open and hair blowing in the wind. She stayed there for years with her hair blowing in the wind until a large gust of wind blew her over a nearby edge.

Because Everest is so high, it actually reaches the stratosphere and slices into the Jetstream. as a result, wind gusts can routinely hit 175 mph. By comparison, a category 5 hurricane is classified by winds over 156 mph.

The helicopter rescue in the movie was, at the time set the record as the highest altitude helicopter. And the pilot did it twice rescuing the Everest movie character and a second person not described in the movie. Several helicopter landings took place afterwards, but it had never been done before. The final altitude record is held by some guy who built an experimental copter and then LANDED ON EVEREST"S PEAK. Guess you can't get higher than that.
