Credit card is a great idea, at 25 I had a perfect credit history with 10 years
on it, one of the best things my Dad did for me. Gave me a 750 credit score and actual real history to get a great rate on our first home.

In terms of card suggestion - I would look into some offered by your bank. It might be easier to get and, if you bank with someone decent, you should be able to get a card that does extra points back at gas stations which I would guess is the highest likely source of spending for your kid. They also can probably work with you on keeping a low credit card limit.
