Rusby Walk-on
My dad had a way of preventing this in his children.
Every weekday during the summer since I was ten he would take us out in the middle of every type of landscape and tell us to move one of the directions repeatedly for eight hours a day. This inculcated a strong sense of direction in me and all of my siblings, uncles and many of my cousins. Of course, we are a family of land surveyors and it would be very strange to do this otherwise but we always know which way is which.
