El Boricua Walk-on
Some friends of mine who are long-time observers and who I hold in the highest
regard in terms of BYU basketball have suggested on a few occasions that Dave Rose has thrown in the towel in regards to recruiting since the team was "thrown under the bus football independence" (their words not mine). I have a hard time buying into their perspective and I mentioned the Lone Peak pipeline since Independence, Bryant, getting the Carlino, Aytes, and Bryant transfers, etc. They responded by stating that all of the players that I mentioned were either drawn to BYU because of the LDS factor (should that even matter?) and/or are legacy kids. They argue that once that dries up, if Rose is still around, that the recruiting fails of today, outside of the best LDS talent in the state and beyond, will set the program back even further. I have to believe that the return of the mission kids now, plus the maturity that we will see from our freshman this year will alleviate these matters and that winning will promote the program in a manner that allows us to continue to progress in the league and in the tournaments to come. I was surprised to hear them say that Coach Rose just does not have the fire that we need to recruit. I am also surprised that they think the recruiting model that we employ today is any different than it has ever been. Just some thoughts. I think, like so many others on board with the hoops program, that maturity, defense, and the return of some very important pieces will give us a lot more better days/years ahead and that as tough as this season is to watch, the payoff will be worth the support that we give.
