There's a wide range of opinions as to what's okay to yell at refs during a game or if it's okay to yell at them at all. I think we can all agree that under NO circumstances is it okay to throw anything (I was a student during the saint mary's/BYU game where we got technical fouls for throwing towels onto the court a few years ago...such an embarrassing day for our fan base).
I personally draw the line at any sort of personal insults towards the refs. It doesn't help anything at all and it just makes our fans look classless. For example, I was at the Pepperdine/BYU game at Pepperdine a few weeks ago and these two old-man BYU fans behind me were relentless about yelling insults at the ref throughout the entire game. "You are the worst ref I've ever seen! Get a new job! You suck ref!!" etc, etc. Granted, they could have said much, much worse things (one of them did throw out a homophobic insult at one point..obviously that's never okay), but it just made me think that it's sad we have these guys representing our fan base. And yes, I understand this isn't uncommon at a sporting event, but that doesnt mean we should encourage or perpetuate it.
I definitely don't hold back when it comes to booing after a bad call, or generic things like "come on ref!". I actually think it's a good thing to boo the refs when a bad call is made against our team, as we want to do whatever we can to "hold them accountable" in a small way. We're also letting our players know we back them up when a ref makes a ticky-tacky call against them. But I really don't think personalized insults towards a ref throughout the game is going to help anything at all and it just makes our fans sound like losers.
