GM allowing the public to buy cars directly from auction
All the company owned cars, rental fleet returns and lease returns can be purchased by anyone. They are doing this after finding that many cars were not purchased at the dealers-only auction and once opened to the public that Carmax ended up buying 80% of them.

They identified a few other up-and-coming online auto groups that had found a way to buy these vehicles and put them into a national network much like Carmax does.

So now GM has rolled out a program where you can easily jump on and pick out one of these cars, see the fixed price and have the car sent to your GM dealership of choice. No negotiation needed. The cars will all come with an extended warranty and some prepaid maintenance. The condition of the vehicles is disclosed upfront so the customer knows exactly what it is they are buying.

Its not a bad deal for the dealerships either. The dealerships get paid a fee that varies depending on model and they didn't have to use their own money to buy and recondition the car and wait for the right buyer to come along.

You can see all of the 40K+ vehicles here:

I like this trend. Dealerships are obnoxious and the traditional car buying process is nightmare for consumers. I am interested to see if other manufactures follow suit and attempt to smooth out the used car shopping process.
