I think he would've signed a max contract up front w/ the Jazz if they would've
offered him one. However, the Jazz decided to allow the market set his price in hopes they'd be able to get him for less. They had tried signing him for $12 million/year but Hayward wanted to hold out for a max contract which he ended up getting thanks to Charlotte.

Hayward and Favors are already locked up for a while, and with the new salary cap we have plenty of room.

It was a restricted contract. As long as we matched any other offer, he had no choice. Unless he was so stubborn
