Actually, this is a message big-time recruits should hear
All this animosity to the message is strange to say the least, although the delivery perhaps could have been better.

Research shows that high-level talent, unless they are the best of the best, do much better as a big fish in a small pond than as a small fish in a big pond, both in school and after. This is outlined pretty well in the Freakanomics series, but it was initially developed by game theorist John Nash (from A Beautiful Mind fame).

How many elite recruits fail to get development and playing time at big name schools simply because there's a guy ahead of him that's even better?

These young kids like to have their ego stroked, so they tend to prefer the big-name schools. They like to think they'll for sure be the guy, even at elite programs (and I'm sure the coaches at these schools are falsely pitching that to them). But if they have parents looking out for them and their future, this message should help convince a few more of these kids to seriously consider schools of the next tier, like BYU, thereby producing a more equitable distribution (Nash equilibrium).
