Didn't watch the originals or has completely forgotten them.

There are multiple episodes that are 'campy' throughout the originals, this was their nod to that style of episode. There is another post on this thread saying it's dumb that Mulder is having a mid life crises and doubting things. This happens probably once a season through the originals. This new season is taking an aspect from the originals and making an episode on each one. It has been very true to the originals in almost every aspect imo. But to each their own
