When did Disney cartoons become made for adults only? (Spoilers for you kids)

My wife and I just took our soon to be 4 year old to his first movie theater experience. We thought we were safe with Disney's Zootopia. Granted, I'm more out of the loop than most of you when it comes to pop culture and recent movies but I did not expect to see a Disney film about corrupt cops, framing innocent people, drugs, drug making, guns, animals being shot in the neck with hand guns, animals attacking other animals ferociously, street hustling, crime, and on and on. All of the humor in the movie was references for adults only...Jokes about "The Godfather, The DMV, etc...Not one child in that theater laughed out loud, only adults. I ended up taking my kid out of the movie early. My 4 year old was not interested in DMV humor, or how the 90% of prey animals were trying to drug the 10% of non prey animals into being violent so that the prey animals could stay in power, and cause discrimination of non prey animals. Um, what happened here? How could this film being marketed towards kids? It's clearly made for adults yet it is a cartoon, with catchy pop song to bring the whole family. A sick marketing ploy to make hundreds of millions. Lesson learned. Never again will I trust any film, not even a Disney cartoon.
