Because in the context of the thread and original post here, clothing and

fashion wasn't the descriptive path we were on but rather identifying someone by their race. If he tried to identify the guy by saying "who is the guy up front with the jeans on?" I would have replied just like you... "You mean the guy with the red checkered shirt?"
