Because I enjoy reliving life's most painful moments, I rewatched the Vegas Bowl
I was at the game in LV, so it was interesting to watch the broadcast. It was still painful to rewatch, even knowing what was going to happen. A couple of thoughts:

1. Everyone is overstating how much better Utah is in the trenches than BYU. Yes, their DL blew up BYU's OL for the first 10 minutes. But, the OL finally seemed to settle in and actually did a decent job against Utah's pass rush in quarters 2-4. On the other side, BYU's DL completely controlled the LOS against Utah's OL during the same stretch, at least until the last drive when Tuiloma went out. BYU's D gave up some big plays in the 1st quarter when everyone on the team was reeling, but they completely shut down the "powerful" utah offense after that, mostly because they controlled the trenches.
2. If one of our fans ever decides to be pathetic enough to gather up clips of dirty plays by Utah players, make sure you remember both the clips from this game of Cory Butler-Byrd laying 2 different late hits (one a complete cheap shot on a totally defenseless punter). Really funny that it ended up being a ute that got ejected before the first half was even over.
3. Tanner Mangum is a stud. There are not many senior QBs in the nation who could bounce back after the start he had and play the way he did the rest of the game. And he was a freshman. I love that guy. We're in good hands with him in Ty's offense for the next few years. And I'd put good money on him being a starter for many years in the NFL, barring serious injury.
4. It really is too bad Tuiloma got hurt. BYU's ability to control the line with Utah's rushing attack totally changed without him out there. Would have been really fun to see Mangum have the chance to drive down the field for the tie.
5. There were two pretty obvious PI calls missed by the refs where a Ute defender basically wrapped his arms around the receiver before the ball even got there, one of which turned into the first pick-six of the game. The refs were sure letting a lot of physical play by the secondary go uncalled early. And the PIs they did call were fire much less contact than the two plays I'm talking about.

Overall, incredibly frustrating game, but probably a fitting way for BM to end his tenure at BYU. Things just never seemed to go right for his teams against Utah.
