It doesn't really matter whether it was shrewd or whether it was desperate: it worked. I thought he was crazy to put in a pinch runner for Shaver, in case the game went extra innings. Turns out that pinch runner squeezed in the tying run on a very close call at the plate, allowing Urry to move to third. That allowed the pop up to move Urry home. Shows why I'm not coaching - among many other reasons.
