I just listened to this interview. It was fantastic, and I came away very impressed with Ronny as an individual. You can say an interview was awesome because it was all "rah, rah BYU", but this wasn't that type of awesome. There was a lot of depth and honesty from Ronny.
The part that struck me most was when he was asked if he would recommend the youth from Oxnard go to BYU. It would've been easy to go either, "Oh, yeah, it's a great school," or to say "well, it's a tough cultural shock that I'm not sure a lot of young people from here would be ready for." Shallow me was hoping for the "Oh, yeah, it's a great school" answer. But his was better. He didn't say yes or no. He said he would tell them it's a decision that's bigger than football. It's about accepting challenges that might not be easy but will mold you into something better, and this was a good place for such an environment. That answer showed his own wisdom as well as respect for the youth he was counseling and their ability to make an informed decision.
I'm not sure Jan was quite ready for a conversation with actual depth to it.
