Forgive the rant, but I just spent the better part of an hour looking into repayment options on student loans (not that I can't afford them, just looking into how I can maximize my payments).
A few things I've learned:
1) PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) has little benefit. I have qualifying employment and my wife doesn't work but I'd have to have 4 kids before an income-based repayment plan lowered my payments sufficiently for me to have any loans forgiven.
2) Consolidating loans generally offers no benefit.
3) Borrowers disincentivize dividing your payments to minimize interest accrual. You can't do biweekly automatic payments without losing a reduced interest incentive you get for doing automatic payments.
I'm just grateful that my student loan burden is nowhere near as bad as most people have it.
