It's possible that Desmond does not really believe what he said or only lightly believes it. You realize in those shows like first take or PTI they are forced to take opposing views at times to make the show interesting.

If you watch the interview he is saying it very light heartedly with a wry smile. I don't think it was vicious at all. Even though there are people out there who do believe it and are vicious.
