It's not like he gets back with perfect position to take right over. There are guys ahead of him. Do you really see him starting over an older Wilstead? He has a chance to compete but it's likely not happening. Especially the type of QB Wilstead is and Detmer's offense. This assuming they don't have others by then.
I'll bet you anything he waits his turn and gets his shot when it's more realistic.
