Kougrage Walk-on
Ned Stearns was BYU's primary RB...that says a lot of what you need to know.
With Luke Staley out for the season from the previous game and his 145 yards per game rushing and Bryan McDonald out after the 5th game, our cupboard was bare fore a team that averaged 220 yards per game rushing which included a difficult to stop option.

Hawaii didn't need to stop the run, they just blitzed and had 7 sacks in that game with 9 forced fumbles and six of them lost, along with an interception. With Stearns as the running back, we needed Mahe to do double duty and take 8 runs along with his spectacular receiving game (181 yards). Stearns had 5 carries for 0 yards. Now you can see Hawaii's game plan. Kudos does go to Ned for being the second leading receiver for 145 yards coming out of the backfield.

With the blitz attack on Doman and after 4 sacks and some forced fumbling, Doman was finally removed after being beat to a pulp, injuring his ribs. Charlie Peterson stepped in and had a fabulous game except for an interception and 3 sacks.

Hawaii's turf field was fast for the team that was most used to using it, but it also caused a lot of injuries. I think BYU vowed to not return until they made changes. There were several really banged up players who had bloody skid marks on their arms from falling or being tackled on the turf.

Both teams had over 600 yards of offense. There were just too many sacks and turnovers to overcome as Hawaii's plan of attack worked well. We had only 97 yards rushing (compared to the average 220) with 2/3rd's of that coming from Mahe and most of the rest From Petersen who averaged about 1.5 ypc. Too bad we didn't at least have Marcus Whalen, but he was redshirting I believe because of troubles that he got himself in to. Brian McDonald was an excellent running back who averaged 5.2 yards per carry. Too bad we didn't have him the full season. He was a good receiver too. I remember in the Cal game against a Tom Holmoe coached crappy bears, he lost his shoe, but continued to run off a great play.

Even though Hawaii had some great things going for them, this would have been a very different game with Staley. Their game plan would not have worked quit the same.
