in general, I look at tire models rather than brands
every brand has good tires and bad tires, and tires that are good for particular attributes that may be more important to you.
I go to tirerack.com and they have an easy to read rating system that shows what each tire is especially good/bad at (fuel efficiency, snow handling, etc.)
