It's not too bad - look for deals on used sets through classified ads.
I have a Honda S2000, and bought a set of early S2000 alloy wheels (no tires) for $175. I snagged a set of lightly used winter tires AND rims for $400 for my sister's Acura TSX.
It is well worth it, plus when you swap summers and winter tires every 6 months or so, you don't have to replace them as often. It does pay off over time.
