Objectively speaking, we are only good enough to manage a single win over our first four games against those opponents.
That's not good enough for ANYBODY associated with BYU athletics, whether we're talking about the fan base or most certainly if we're talking about those in the program/administration. However, still objectively speaking, it's true that we are not very far at all from winning more of those games. If we were 3-1 right now with just a bit cleaner games or just a bit different luck, we'd be top 25 and we'd all be feeling that we had a very good team on our hands. The difference between the 1-3 team and the 3-1 team we wish we had is pretty small.

So, there's work to do. But it's an encouraging situation. With all the struggles involved with new coaches and new systems on both sides of the ball, with both sides of the ball trying to excel in those new systems with some personnel not really suited to the new systems, we're still close to being the type of team we all want. We have a head coach who has never been a head coach anywhere. We have a defensive coordinator that has never been a defensive coordinator before, and we also have an offensive coordinator that has never even coached at the college level before. And yet we've been very competitive in every game against a brutal schedule. And the offense is really only just starting to come together.

Nobody is satisfied, but it's OK to acknowledge that we aren't far off from being the type of team that can succeed against the toughest of schedules. I'm quite encouraged that this coaching staff "gets it" and will do great things once they are able to get a couple recruiting classes under their belts to address roster weaknesses and as the coaching staff refines their teaching techniques and refines their schemes as they gain experience in their new roles.
