My dad, who was a HS player, and over a decade long HS coach in Utah texted me "What the **** was that?" from a man that doesn't curse. Clearly it was a mistake.
The halftime interview, Kalani said (paraphrasing) that the staff had seen a tendency that BSU did on its punt coverage and they felt reasonably confident they could expose that. I have no idea what they saw, or what they thought but it had to be enough for Kalani, Ed, and probably Ty to think it was a good idea.
Maybe BSU doesn't tend to rush the punter in those situations, but plays to set up a good kick return when the opponent punts from their end zone. Depending on how they line up and execute, it clearly looked like the left side was the exposed side.
Anyway, Kalani had done some film work and wanted to expose a weakness. Not the best time to do it, but we all make dumb mistakes at some point in our lives and in our profession. I honestly wonder if there was a mistake or a mixed up signal and Kalani just took the blame for it. Probably not, but I wouldn't put it past him.
Clearly Kalani is an aggressive coach. That much has been established and I LOVE it. Maybe not 4th and 19 from your end zone, but I like the aggressive attitude (going for two point conversions, multiple 4th and goals, 4th and shorts, etc.).
