Remember Schwarber hit 5 homers the playoffs last year and then got hurt in the third game of the seasons in early April.
One April article by Matt Snyder of CBS interviewed the surgeon right after the repair was done, after which Snyder concluded there was a 99.99% chance Schwarber would not return in 2016, even in the event of a deep run by the Cubs in the playoffs.
This is going to be a big part of the story, especially if he hits well.
The roster spot is not an issue. He's replacing an unused pitcher whose name i can't spell.
