I just checked for grins.
CFW has the Big8 going back to 1928. Iowa State didn't win a single conference championship. Kansas State won one in 1934.
Also, SMU and Rice joined the Southwest conference at the beginning and I think you can make a better argument that they helped built that conference (although SMU did a lot to help destroy it) than with ISU and the Big8. That didn't help them in the end.
