BYUSN was asking people for the favorite BYU vs Wyoming memory
I have one that stands out more than others, both for the game and who I was with.

Dec 7th, 1996.

BYU was ranked #6.

WAC Championship Game.

I had returned from the mission on November 26th of that same year. My brother was on leave from the Marines for the remainder of the year. I had not seen my brother (other than 1 P-Day where my mission president allowed him to visit) in over 3 years due to mission and military. Plus, it was my first game I watched since returning.

He and I used to sit and watch all of the BYU games every year, and we also would watch NFL on Sundays together. My Father and Mother divorced when he was 6 and I was 3 so we never had a dad in the home. Football was the one thing he and I loved and we had in common. We would both talk stats, match-ups, those we felt overrated/underrated etc. We both loved Football.

Myself, my brother and several of his friends got together to watch the game at his apartment.

It was such a great game, great memories made and it was my first time trying Beer Brats.

I share this with you because this was one of the last games that I was able to watch with my brother before he was injured while serving in the Gulf War. In 2000, my brother suffered a massive head injury while taking fire, we thought we would lose him. But like the champ and competitor that he is, he came through. But not without any lasting effects.

He is now epileptic and suffers from memory loss and PTSD.

Since that time he does not talk sports as much with me. He still watches the game, but most of the time by himself. He has a hard time being around groups of people and prefers to either be alone, or with 2-3 people at most in a room.

The reason this game was so big for me was not just because of the year that was for BYU, but because it was one of the last few years my brother and I truly talked shop about sports. 1996-1998 (he was deployed a lot after 98 so I did not see him much at all).

Football, truly an amazing tradition to build memories and bonds with others.
