A BYU coach in the past was very much as you described
in your OP; he would tell things exactly like they were. From my recollection, his honesty with all things BYU basketball was too much. There is honesty, and then there is brutal honesty. He was in the "brutal" category many times, and it came back to bite him.

Sometimes if someone was playing poorly, he would identify that player (or players), by name on the air (in the coaches show after the game). He would discuss what that player did right, and what that player did wrong. He would talk about opposing teams and players specifically and sometimes too much in-depth information was shared. While his strategy wasn't clearly discussed on air, many other things were that probably shouldn't have been.

I know there were some who found this method of communicating insightful and perhaps refreshing. Fans always want to know what is really going on (we're fans, knowing these things increases our love of the program, coach, players, etc. -- right?), and this coach let them have a lot of it; they got to see behind the curtain, and know what was really happening and how the coach actually felt and what he thought. The problem with this was that players on the team were negatively impacted by being discussed like this in the press and on air, and their play reflected that at times. Example: Coach would discuss the problems passing out of a double team a player has, and that would focus the spotlight on that player for the next game, to his detriment sometimes, and he would play poorly. On the other side, when discussing opponents, he would really get them wound up about playing BYU because of what he said. It wasn't a big surprise when this coach was eventually let go.

I admire coach Rose for what he's done with the team and how he is always professional about his job. He may have some "coach speak" moments, but believe me, they are far superior to the alternative of being overly open about everything. He's makes the right choice every time by protecting his players and putting them first. He does not give too much insight into any negativity with the team. Nice work Coach, keep it up.
