They have buyouts in contracts. Typically the new school pays the buyout and it
gets deducted from the money the coach gets from the new contract. In that regard it's very similar. Both parties pay a financial penalty for leaving.

We're all up in arms about a low income athlete struggling to pay for a year. Yet few of us worry about a low income non athlete paying for four years.

Pell grants, need based academic scholarships and access to training table food and student loans make it far from daunting for a low income athlete to spend a year at BYU. Pell grants alone more than cover tuition if parental income is low enough. And the athlete can even work during the summer.

I'm not saying it's totally fair. I am saying that, on the list of people I feel sorry for, there are a lot of people that appear before I get to athletes that have to figure out how to survive a year at BYU without a scholarship.
