My meeting with Lavell...
In the summer of 1984 (could be 83 or 85, at my age my memory is a little fuzzy) I took my family, including my mother-in-law, to tour the UK. We rented a car, a baby sized Mercedes, which barely contained the 5 of us and our luggage. The trunk took real engineering and a shoehorn to hold what we had and the front seat passenger had to ride with a large suitcase under their feet. It was pretty comical to see, especially in the mornings when we took the luggage down to load the car when leaving the hotel.

We got up one morning after staying at the legendary North Berwick golf resort (we didn't golf, just a reasonably priced place we could stay) and went down to leave. I was going through my daily struggle to try to figure out how it all fit in the car. There was a tour bus near our car which was loading a group, primarily men. Three of them walked over to me and one of them laughingly said, "I hope you don't mind if we watch you, but we don't believe you can get all that in that little car." I looked up and it was Lavell Edwards. His companions introduced themselves...Duffy Daugherty, legendary coach of Michigan State and Pepper Rodgers, head coach at Kansas, UCLA, and Georgia Tech. They were on a golf tour of football coaches.

They stood and watched until I finally got it all in. I had the pleasure of introducing myself to Lavell and telling him I was a big fan. What's the odds of meeting three coaching legends in North Scotland.

Two of my kids subsequently attended and graduated from BYU. I am a San Jose State grad and church convert who never lived in Utah but became hooked on BYU when my younger brother attended in the Tommy Hudspeth days. Lavell was like your favorite grandpa, even back then. Forevermore I've felt loyalty and affection for a great man.
