read Namath's book, or books on the Jets. he was hated by his teammates, ESPECIALLY his defense, because he played in a really stupid way. they'd tell him to do X, and he'd do Y. it's no wonder that when he won, he actually did what he was coached to do. in other years, he just wanted to throw the stupid deep ball.
but the fact that you have to bring in what he did off the field (and you're right about it) only supports the OP. as a QB, he was OVERRATED. the results on the field did not match what was going on off the field.
you're just off on Aikman. he was everything to that team. read Boys Will Be Boys and you'll find that he, only behind jimmy johnson, ran the team. without him, they were lost. furthermore, you're talking about an era and an offense that was run first. he was put into difficult situations, and thrived.
his biggest issue was that he got hurt. that i will give you. where i disagree is what they did without him. they won without aikman (only really when they had Kosar, a legit backup). they won without emmitt. but they lost without irvin. irvin was the key because he was the soul of the team. they had to put deion out at WR they were so thin there. but for that offense, Aikman was great. if any team stopped the run, Aikman killed it.
